Energy Absorbing Polymer
A
client of JASRA’s has been working with some
commercially available polymers for one of their
applications unrelated to energy absorption. The client
required a much finer particle size than was available
(the polymer is not normally available as a fine
powder). Various commercial grinding and pulverizing
services were engaged with no success.
The client then
placed contracts with two academic institutions with
strong backgrounds in engineering and polymer science to
try to understand the problem. These academic
investigations came to the conclusion that this polymer
had heretofore unknown extremely high energy absorbing
characteristics.
A patent search
has been conducted and this property appears unknown and
patent applications are being submitted. It is
speculated that this material may have uses for
lightweight armor or other similar applications. Such
applications are outside the scope of the client’s
interest, so they are considering out-licensing this
technology.
