HydroSciences
is a startup company developing novel applications for
concentrated solutions of hydronium ions.
Hydronium
ions, H3O+ , occur naturally at
very low concentrations in water. HydroSciences
believes it is the first company ever to develop the
technology for producing concentrated solutions of
hydronium ions, which to the best of our knowledge have
never been studied before. The technology is heavily
patented.
Concentrated
hydronium ion solutions have a pH of 0.3 and can be
diluted with large quantities of water for many
applications. Such concentrated acids can typically be
used for sanitization (microbial kill) and the etching
of various material surfaces, and hydronium ion
solutions appear to have the same utility, but with the
added benefit that the spent fluid is just water!
The truly novel
property of hydronium ion solutions that has been
discovered is that they appear to be benign to mammalian
cells – even at a pH of 0.3!
Studies have been
conducted demonstrating that these low pH solutions have
superb antibacterial kill properties and have aggressive
metal etching properties, while these same solutions
have shown no adverse effects on mammalian skin when
studied in formally conducted intact skin studies,
abraded skin studies and Draize tests. Anecdotal
application of these solutions to human skin appears has
shown no untoward effects.
HydroSciences is
currently starting the study of application of these
solutions for sanitizing surfaces and instruments,
anti-microbial applications, water purification, wound
debriding and cleansing agents, and as a replacement for
concentrated acid solutions in industrial processes. An
added benefit (apart from the safety issues) of using
these solutions appears to be that any resulting spent
fluid is just water.
